Shed shingle example
A 10×12 gable shed with 12 inch overhangs has an adjusted roof footprint of 12×14 ft. With a 6/12 pitch, the sloped roof area is about 188 sq ft before waste. With 10% waste and shingles that cover 33.3 sq ft per bundle, the project needs about 7 bundles of shingles, plus one underlayment roll, drip edge around the roof perimeter, and ridge cap along the peak.

What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Shingle packages often describe coverage by bundles per square, so this calculator shows both square footage and roofing squares.
Do shed shingles need starter strip?
Many asphalt shingle roofs use starter strip along the eaves and sometimes the rakes. Follow the shingle manufacturer's instructions for wind resistance and warranty requirements.
Should I include the roof overhang?
Yes. Shingles, underlayment, and drip edge cover the actual roof deck, including eave and rake overhangs, not just the shed wall footprint.
