Shed roof trim planning
Shed Roof Overhang Calculator
Plan eave and rake overhangs for a backyard shed, then estimate the roof deck footprint, sloped roof area, fascia boards, soffit panels, drip edge, and rough material cost.
How to use the shed roof overhang calculator
- Enter the shed wall width and length.
- Choose the roof style and pitch, then enter the eave and rake overhangs you want to test.
- Adjust fascia, soffit, drip edge, sheathing, and price values to match the materials available near you.
- Use the result as a planning list before you cut rafters, order trim, or price roofing materials.
The calculator adds the overhangs to the shed footprint, converts the footprint to sloped roof area, then rounds materials up to full boards, panels, sticks, and sheets.
Shed overhang example
A 10×12 ft gable shed with 12 inch eaves and 12 inch rakes has a roof deck footprint of 12×14 ft. With a 6/12 pitch and 10% waste, the sloped roof area is about 207 sq ft. The trim plan needs roughly 55 linear ft of fascia, about 52 sq ft of soffit coverage, 6 ten-foot drip edge sticks, and 7 full 4×8 roof sheathing sheets.
FAQ
What is a good shed roof overhang?
For many backyard sheds, 6 to 12 inches is a practical starting range. A small overhang helps move water away from siding and doors, while a larger overhang may need stronger framing and better wind-uplift detailing.
Does rake overhang change the roof area?
Yes. Rake overhang adds width at the gable ends. Eave overhang adds length along the lower roof edges. Both increase roof deck area and trim quantities.
Do I need soffit under a shed overhang?
Not always. Some sheds leave rafter tails exposed, while others use solid or vented soffit for a finished look and pest control. If you are leaving the overhang open, set soffit panel price to zero or ignore that line.
Should I include gutters?
This calculator focuses on overhang, fascia, soffit, drip edge, and roof deck materials. If you plan to add gutters, use the eave fascia length as a helpful starting point for gutter length.
