Shed ramp planning

Shed Ramp Width Calculator

Size a shed ramp for a mower, cart, snow blower, wheelbarrow, or storage shed door. Enter the door opening and widest item you plan to roll in, then estimate a comfortable ramp width, side clearance, surface material, supports, and rough cost.

Recommended ramp width 54 in 42 in equipment with 6 in clearance per side.
Ramp fit

Measure the actual outside width of the mower deck, wheelbarrow tray, cart tires, or snow blower housing—not just the tire track.

Surface and cost

Quick answer: shed ramp width

A shed ramp should be at least as wide as the shed door opening and wide enough for the largest item you plan to roll into the shed. A common mower-shed ramp is about 48 to 60 inches wide, especially when a riding mower needs several inches of clearance on both sides.

For a 42 inch mower deck, 6 inches of side clearance on each side gives a 54 inch clear ramp width. If your shed door is 48 inches wide, the wider mower clearance controls the ramp width.

How to use the shed ramp width calculator

  1. Measure the finished shed door opening.
  2. Measure the widest mower, cart, snow blower, wheelbarrow, or bin you will use.
  3. Add side clearance so you are not threading the wheels perfectly every time.
  4. Enter the ramp length and surface type to estimate plywood sheets or deck boards.
  5. Adjust local prices for a quick planning cost.

Suggested shed ramp widths

Small push-mower ramps often work around 36 inches wide. A practical riding-mower shed ramp is often 48, 54, or 60 inches wide. Wider garden tractors, zero-turn mowers, and double-door sheds may need 60 to 72 inches or more.

If space and materials allow, a slightly wider ramp is easier to use than one that barely fits. The extra width also helps when the ground is wet, the mower approaches at a small angle, or a cart wobbles while loaded.

Width, door opening, and side curbs

The clear inside ramp width is the usable rolling surface. If you add side curbs or edge boards, the overall outside width becomes wider. Make sure the top of the ramp meets the shed threshold cleanly and does not leave wheel-catching lips near the door jambs.

For heavy equipment, ramp width is only one part of the plan. Also check ramp slope, support spacing, surface traction, fasteners, and the way the ramp attaches to the shed floor.

Shed ramp width FAQ

What is a good shed ramp width for a riding mower?

Many riding mowers feel comfortable on a 48 to 60 inch ramp, but the right width depends on your mower deck and the door opening. Measure the actual mower width and add side clearance.

Should my shed ramp match the door width?

The top of the ramp should line up safely with the door opening. The ramp can be wider at the bottom or overall, but avoid abrupt edges where wheels can catch.

How much wider should a ramp be than the mower?

A useful starting point is 4 to 6 inches of clearance on each side. More clearance is helpful for larger equipment, wet surfaces, or frequent use.

Does a wider ramp need more supports?

Usually yes. A wider ramp needs enough stringers or cross supports so the surface does not flex. Use the support spacing result as a planning estimate and follow safe building practices for your load.
