How to use the hay bale storage calculator
Measure the clear area where hay can actually sit, not the outside size of the building. If posts, feeders, a tack corner, a tractor path, or an open doorway reduce the space, include that with the access allowance. Then choose a bale preset or enter your own dimensions.
The result is a planning estimate for dry, covered storage. Final capacity depends on bale consistency, stacking pattern, equipment access, floor strength, ventilation, and safe stack height.

What bale dimensions should I use?
Use actual measurements when possible. A common small square bale is roughly 14 × 18 × 36 inches, but bale size varies by baler, hay type, moisture, and density.
Why does the calculator subtract aisle space?
A perfect wall-to-wall cube rarely works in a real barn. Aisle allowance covers walking room, loader access, posts, uneven walls, doors, and clearance around the stack.
How much hay weight can a loft hold?
Check the structure before loading a loft. Hay is heavy, and old lofts or light framing may need a builder, engineer, or experienced barn contractor to confirm safe load limits.
Should round bales be stored inside?
Covered storage usually reduces weather loss. Round bales take more footprint per bale than small squares, so compare the storage cost with expected hay savings.
