Enter the usable loose-fill volume per package. If a shavings bag says it expands to 8 cubic feet, enter 8. If your supplier only lists compressed volume, ask for expected expanded coverage or use a conservative estimate.
Does a matted stall need less bedding?
Often, yes. Rubber mats can reduce the depth needed for cushion and absorption, but many barns still use enough bedding to keep the horse comfortable and the stall easy to clean.
How often should I add more bedding?
It depends on the horse, time spent inside, stall drainage, bedding type, and cleaning routine. The weekly replacement setting is a planning shortcut; adjust it after watching actual use for a week or two.
