Shed finish material math

Shed Skirting Calculator

Estimate skirting panels, linear feet, vents, access openings, top and bottom trim, waste, and rough material cost for finishing the base of a shed.

How to use the shed skirting calculator

  1. Enter the shed width, length, and average height from grade to the shed floor or lower framing.
  2. Add the size of any access opening you plan to leave for storage, plumbing, or wiring.
  3. Choose a panel size and price for lattice, vinyl, corrugated metal, plywood, or another skirting material.
  4. Adjust vent spacing, trim price, waste, and extras for a first-pass shopping list.

The calculator finds the shed perimeter, converts height to square footage, subtracts the access opening, adds waste, then rounds material counts up to full panels, vents, and trim boards.

Shed skirting example

A 10×12 shed has a 44 ft perimeter. With an average skirting height of 24 inches, the base area is about 88 sq ft before openings and waste. After a 3 ft access opening and a 10% waste allowance, that is about 90 sq ft of adjusted skirting area. Full 4×8 sheets cover that by area, but planning wall runs usually means buying about 12 panels so seams, corners, and cuts are easier to place.

FAQ

What is the best material for shed skirting?

Lattice is easy to cut and ventilates well. Vinyl and composite panels handle moisture better than untreated wood. Corrugated metal is durable but can have sharp edges, so trim and fasteners matter.

How high should shed skirting be?

Measure from finished grade to the shed floor framing or bottom edge you want to cover. Common backyard sheds need 12 to 36 inches, but sloped lots may need taller pieces on one side.

Does shed skirting need ventilation?

Yes. A shed base should usually breathe so moisture does not stay trapped under the floor. Use vents, lattice openings, or screened gaps on more than one side.

Can this calculator handle a sloped yard?

Use an average skirt height for a quick estimate. For steep slopes, calculate the tall side separately or add extra waste because more panels may be cut into tapered pieces.
