Paver joint sand calculator
Polymeric Sand Calculator
Estimate how many bags of polymeric sand you need to fill paver joints for a patio, walkway, driveway, or landing.
How to use this polymeric sand calculator
Enter the patio or walkway length and width, the paver face size, the average joint width, and the depth you plan to fill. The calculator estimates the open joint volume, adds your overage, and divides by the usable cubic feet in each bag.
Polymeric sand coverage changes quickly as joints get wider or deeper. A narrow 1/8 inch joint can use far less material than a 1/4 inch joint, especially on small-format pavers with many seams.
Quick tips before buying paver joint sand
- Check that your joint width and depth match the sand manufacturer's recommended range.
- Make sure joints are clean and dry before sweeping in polymeric sand.
- Use a small overage for simple square patios and a larger overage for curves, repairs, or irregular stone.
- Keep an unopened extra bag if matching the same color later would be difficult.
Polymeric sand FAQ
Is polymeric sand the same as leveling sand?
No. Leveling sand goes under the pavers as a bedding layer. Polymeric sand is swept into the joints after pavers are set, then activated according to the product directions.
How deep should polymeric sand be in paver joints?
Many installs fill most of the joint depth while leaving the top slightly below the paver surface or bevel. Follow the product label, especially for minimum depth requirements.
Can I use this for flagstone?
Yes, as a rough estimate if you enter the average stone size and joint width. Irregular flagstone joints vary a lot, so use a higher overage and check the product's maximum joint width.
