Gate frame layout

Fence Gate Brace Calculator

Calculate the diagonal brace for a wood fence gate. Enter the gate frame size to estimate brace length, brace angle, frame board length, anti-sag cable length, and a rough hardware budget.

Diagonal brace 5 ft 36 in wide by 48 in tall gate with a 53.1° brace angle.
Gate frame size

Use the clear inside frame opening if the diagonal brace fits between the rails and stiles. Add trimming allowance if you want extra length for test cuts.

Materials and cost

The board estimate includes two vertical stiles, your horizontal rails, and one diagonal brace. Pickets, hinges, latch, paint, and post materials are separate.

How to use this gate brace calculator

  1. Measure the inside width and height of the rectangular gate frame.
  2. Use the diagonal brace length for a wood brace or anti-sag cable planning length.
  3. Use the angle results to set a speed square or miter saw, then sneak up on the final fit.
  4. Check the board and cost estimates before buying framing boards and hardware.

For a wood gate, a diagonal compression brace usually rises from the lower hinge side to the upper latch side. That lets gate weight push back into the hinge post instead of pulling the latch side downward. A cable anti-sag kit normally runs the opposite direction because it works in tension.

Fence gate brace FAQ

What is the formula for gate brace length?

Use the Pythagorean formula: diagonal length = √(width² + height²). For a 36 inch by 48 inch gate frame, the inside diagonal is 60 inches before trimming allowance.

Should the diagonal brace be tight?

Yes. A wood compression brace should fit snugly between the frame members so weight transfers into the hinge side. Loose braces do not stop sag well.

What if my gate is very wide?

Wide gates put more leverage on the hinge post. Consider a stronger post, heavier hinges, a double gate, a wheel, or a welded metal frame for heavy driveway or privacy gates.
