Deck calculator
Deck Board Spacing Calculator
Estimate how many deck boards you need, the exact gap that fits your deck width, total linear feet, screw count, and a quick material cost.
How to use this deck board spacing calculator
Enter the deck width you need to cover, the length the boards will run, the actual width of your deck boards, and the gap you are aiming for. The calculator chooses a practical board count and then shows the exact gap that fits evenly across the deck.
The material estimate includes a waste allowance for cutoffs, board selection, and mistakes. For diagonal layouts, picture-frame borders, stairs, or heavy trimming, increase the waste percentage.
Common deck board spacing examples
- 12 ft deck width with 5.5 in boards: usually lands around 25–26 boards depending on the target gap.
- Composite decking: use the manufacturer’s required gap for end-to-end and side-to-side spacing.
- Pressure-treated lumber: boards may shrink as they dry, so installation spacing can depend on moisture content.
FAQ
Should deck boards be spaced 1/8 inch or 1/4 inch apart?
Both are common finished gaps. The best choice depends on the material, moisture level, ventilation, and manufacturer instructions. Composite decking usually has specific spacing requirements, while wet pressure-treated lumber may shrink after installation.
What does “deck width across boards” mean?
It is the distance being filled by repeated board widths and gaps. If your boards run front-to-back, enter the left-to-right deck width. If your boards run left-to-right, enter the front-to-back distance.
Does this include picture-frame border boards?
The main calculator estimates field boards. If your deck has a picture-frame border, subtract the border width from the field area or add extra waste to cover border pieces and cuts.
