Deck calculator
Deck Baluster Spacing Calculator
Plan deck railing balusters with even gaps that stay under your maximum opening. Enter the clear rail opening, baluster size, and number of sections to get a clean spacing layout and shopping estimate.
How to use the deck baluster spacing calculator
Measure the clear opening between two deck posts, not the full outside-to-outside rail length. Enter that opening, the actual width of one baluster, and the largest gap you want to allow. The calculator chooses enough balusters to keep each opening under the limit, then shows the exact spacing.
For a polished railing, mark the center of the first baluster from the inside face of the post, then repeat the center-to-center spacing across the section. Check the last gap before fastening everything permanently.
Common deck baluster spacing examples
- 6 ft opening with 1.5 in balusters: 13 balusters create equal gaps of about 3.75 in.
- 4 ft opening with 1.5 in balusters: 9 balusters create equal gaps of about 3.45 in.
- 8 ft opening with 1.5 in balusters: 18 balusters create equal gaps of about 3.63 in.
FAQ
Do I measure between posts or from post center to post center?
For baluster spacing, measure the clear opening between the inside faces of the posts. Post center spacing is useful for post layout, but baluster gaps are controlled by the open space people can pass through.
Why does the calculator default to 3.875 inches instead of exactly 4 inches?
A small cushion helps with slightly warped lumber, uneven posts, tape-measure error, and inspection tolerance. Always follow your local code and railing product instructions.
Can I use this for stair balusters?
You can use it for a straight measured opening, but stair railings often need layout along a slope and may have different inspection details. Treat stair results as a planning check and confirm the final layout on site.
