Mobile tractors are usually tighter than permanent chicken runs because they are moved to fresh ground. For planning, standard laying hens often start around 4 square feet per bird, broilers around 2.5 square feet per bird, bantams around 3 square feet per bird, and large breeds around 5 square feet per bird.
If birds spend most of the day inside the tractor, or if you move it less often, give them more room. Crowding shows up fast as bare ground, pecking, wet litter, smell, and escape attempts by tiny feathered masterminds.
