How to use this cattle hay calculator

  1. Enter the number of cattle and their average body weight.
  2. Choose a dry matter intake rate. The default 2.5% is a practical starting point for many beef cow winter plans.
  3. Enter hay dry matter, pasture offset, and waste so the estimate reflects the hay you actually feed and buy.
  4. Add bale weight, bale price, and feeding days to estimate rounded bale count and cost.

Cattle hay calculator FAQ

Is 2.5% of body weight right for all cattle?

No. It is a planning baseline. Dry cows, lactating cows, calves, growing stock, dairy animals, cold weather, and low-quality forage can all change intake needs.

Why does hay dry matter matter?

Hay contains moisture. If a ration guideline says a cow needs a certain amount of dry matter, the as-fed hay weight must be higher than the dry matter weight unless the hay is perfectly dry.

How much hay waste should I plan for?

Many small farms use a 5% to 15% allowance for decent feeders and stored hay. Open feeding, mud, rain, loose hay, and poor storage can push waste higher.

Can this calculate hay for calves or dairy cows?

Yes, if you enter the average animal weight and choose a suitable intake percentage. For production ration decisions, use a hay analysis and advice from a qualified nutritionist or extension office.
