How to use the arena footing calculator

A 60 ft × 120 ft arena at 2 inches deep covers 7,200 square feet. With 8% overage and a 1.4 tons/yd³ material density, the estimate is about 67 tons of footing, or 4 truckloads if each load carries 22 tons.

Arena footing calculator FAQ

Can I use this for arena sand?

Yes. Use it for arena sand, sand blends, or footing additives when you know the target depth and material density. If you are adding only a thin top-up layer, enter just the added depth.

Should I add overage?

Usually yes. A small overage helps cover grading variation, moisture, compaction, blending, and delivery differences. The default 8% is a practical planning buffer, but your installer or supplier may recommend a different number.

Is deeper footing always better?

No. Too much loose footing can strain horses and make maintenance harder. The right depth depends on the discipline, base layer, material blend, moisture, compaction, and how the arena is groomed.

Does this include the arena base?

No. This calculator estimates the riding surface or footing layer. Base stone, drainage layers, geotextile fabric, excavation, edging, and grading should be estimated separately.
